Transport for NSW seeks app to replace learner-driver logbook

Up to $30k in seed funding available to winning design team

Transport for NSW is seeking help to develop an app to replace the paper learner-driver logbook.

Individuals, start-up organisations and companies are being called on to enter the The Learner Log Book Innovation Challenge by July 15.

“Ask any learner or parent - it is time for a system which taps into the latest technology and moves into the digital age,” said Bernard Carlon, executive director Centre for Road Safety NSW.

“There’s a better way for customers to record their driving hours, and we want to work closely with the technology industry and entrepreneurs to develop an innovative new system.”

The winner stands to receive up to $30,000 in seed funding and will be given the option to join a four month coaching and incubation program. They will work alongside subject matter experts from Transport for NSW and the Centre for Road Safety, Roads and Maritime Services and have use of facilities at Westpac’s innovation centre.

The app needs to capture the same information required in current paper based log books where learner drivers manually document their progress, and their supervisors sign the entries to validate them.

Crucially, the app will need to account of the law which prohibits learner drivers from using a mobile phone while in a vehicle. Unrestricted licence holders can make calls if the phone is on a fixed cradle or if they are using a Bluetooth device.

The Centre for Road Safety said the app will “need to be designed so as to not distract learner drivers or their supervisors and ensure learners abide by all applicable road rules”.

The winning app will be delivered later this year. An information session for potential applicants takes place on June 29 in Sydney.
